Bank statement to Excel: review before bookkeeping
Convert a bank statement to Excel with printed dates, transaction descriptions, amounts and balances. Review the preview before importing data.
Start with the original PDF
Download the statement PDF from your bank rather than printing a browser screenshot. Select text in the PDF to check whether it has a text layer. Upload one statement and use your free first two pages to inspect the result.
Review signs and dates
Check deposits are positive and withdrawals negative. Compare at least the first and last transaction on each page. Dates remain as printed: 04/05 may mean April 5 or 4 May. Add the statement year and normalize dates yourself before a ledger import.
Check the arithmetic
Opening balance plus the signed transaction total should equal closing balance. BankXL shows the difference and flags transitions between printed running balances. A missing transaction can be suspected, but cannot always be located when the PDF has no running balances.
Save a checked workbook
Correct amounts or descriptions in the preview, then download XLSX or CSV. XLSX includes a Balance check sheet. Keep your own copy: source and results expire after 24 hours. No direct accounting-system import is performed.
