Convert credit card statement to Excel and check payment signs

Review credit card charges, payments and debt balances before exporting a statement as Excel or CSV.

Separate activity from summary

Use transaction dates and descriptions to distinguish purchases from statement totals, minimum payments and credit limits. Compare the row count with the original activity section. Summary lines are not transactions.

Choose a consistent debt convention

Credit card statements often show amounts owed as positive debt. A purchase then increases debt and a payment reduces it. Bank-style Debit/Credit or Charges/Payments extraction may use the opposite sign. Review and correct each amount and both balances so all signs use the same convention; automatic classification is only a starting point.

Check purchases and refunds

For an opening debt of 500.00, a purchase of 60.00 and payment of 100.00 should produce closing debt 460.00. A cash-account convention would represent the entire calculation with opposite signs. Credits and refunds must be checked against the printed statement.

Export only after review

The workbook is a plain transaction table, not a QBO or OFX file. CSV formulas in descriptions are escaped for spreadsheet safety. Check your accounting software’s required headers, date format and amount convention before mapping an import.
